Autumn SPOTLIGHT by Dr. Jeff
When we recognize the symptoms of allergy in dogs, it becomes easy to provide them with much needed relief. A dog will suffer from the same allergies as people, but will manifest with different symptoms.
The three symptoms of allergies in dogs are rubbing the face, chewing the paws, and licking armpits and groin. Fleas will cause a dog to chew mainly at the tail-end area. Sometimes dogs will have itchy eyes and sneezing. Vomiting and diarrhea may be symptoms of food allergies along with hives and a rash.
Treatment includes antihistamines, steroids, and omega fatty acids. Cyclosporine (Atopica) may also be used.
